Anatomy of a citation

Every claim wears a tag. Like a very organized dog.

Each source in an answer is a little manila tab. It names three things, and tapping it slides the document out with the quoted lines highlighted.

The file itself: a report, a memo, a transcript.

Pentagon Papers · Report, Part IV · p. 12Demo excerpt (paraphrased)

The Defense Department's own study of US decision-making in Vietnam ran from 1945 to 1967. It was commissioned in 1967 and classified on completion.

Portions were published in 1971; the full report was declassified in 2011.

How claims are marked

Labelled, not adjudicated.

"There is no evidence for that" usually means four different things. Evil ASF tells you which one you're looking at.

  • Documented

It is in the record. Quoted, with the file, the page and the release.

  • Contested

Credible sources disagree. You get the official account and the challenge to it, with what each rests on.

  • Unresolved

The question is open. Nobody has the document that would settle it, and saying so beats picking a side.

  • Speculative

No documentary basis found. Still discussed with you; never dressed up as established.

"Not in this index" is a real answer. It is not the same claim as "did not happen".
